Evernote 3 Beta - My new capture tool

Saturday, April 5, 2008

I've been using the new Evernote 3 Beta as my capture tool for the last few weeks and must say how impressed I have been with it. The main advantage with it is that I have access to my notes wherever I am because of its ability to synchronise seamlessly between my computer, the web and my windows mobile phone. Now wherever I am I can capture a thought and have access to it no matter what platform I am working on. This is a massive advantage for me over OneNote where most of my notes where stuck on my home machine. There is the ability to tag notes and also to mark notes as to-do items - so I may switch to using it as a next action manager, although I have not at present.

If anyone is interested in trying it the folks at Evernote have given me 10 invites for the Beta Program so drop me a line.

Here are some detailed reviews of Evernote which will give you a much better idea of how it works.

I'm not interested in EverNote as I dont' want to switch between application.
I've implemented my own "GTD" system with OneNote and Outlook 2007 and I sync between machines using either FolderShare or SugarSync.

I'm sure the next version of OneNote will add many features so I resist the temption of playing with a new toy (EverNote) as long as the 2007 duo gets the job done.

I hope you will post your system using Outlook 2007 as you promised ;)

First "comment" ever on a blog. I would like one of these invites to Evernote. How do I get one?

I've been waiting for a Treo (PalmOS) version of Evernote forEver - this might just fit my needs.

I just can't seem to get an invitation - if anyone has one to give, please send me one?

@intreprinzator - Yes, I'll be posting re Outlook 2007. It fell of the radar a little but it's still a Next Action. I do hope OneNote 2007 gets into "the cloud" in its next version - it would make things so much easier. I don't have OneNote installed at work and to be honest OneNote Mobile is a pretty poor program in terms of accessing all your data. As I said I'm just capturing for now in Evernote - when I process I end up moving most stuff into OneNote, I just find the capture easier in Evernote.

Hi Rob
Just curious as to why Evernote is better a syncing than OneNote?
I find OneNote amazing at syncing between my tablet and desktop, so I always have my notes with me out and about on my tablet, and these are then shared as soon as I get home.

@oliver: I agree, synching between desktops and tablets with onenote is great and if these were the only devices I used I'd be happy with it. However, I'm often out and about with my Windows Mobile phone or stuck using my works desktop. In these situations the ability of Evernote to synchronise all my notes over the web is far more useful. If I can access the web I can get all my notes from any location on any machine, something I can not yet do with OneNote. There are still a lot of features where OneNote is the clear winner, but as far as collecting then accessing notes goes Evernote seems better at present.
