Going The Extra Mile
Tuesday, April 3, 2007
I strive to go the extra mile, to over deliver on my commitments, to give world class levels of service.
But balance is needed too. Going the extra mile in one direction will take you further away from your other commitments. That’s why I believe it's important to make sure these extra miles don't add up to a major departure from other areas of focus in your life. Sure, staying on at work for an extra hour unpaid to deliver outstanding service and value is great, but what about your kids waiting at home to see you. There's no point going an extra mile if it takes you over a cliff. In the end it's all about choices and balance. You always need to be aware of all your commitments in order to judge how much to put into one and what impact that will have on others. This is where a system like GTD comes into it's own, by listing all your commitments you can then make an informed choice on where you are going to put in that little bit extra and what may need to be sacrificed elsewhere as a result. Always bear that in mind before setting off on that extra mile journey - is it really taking you in the direction you want to go? So - go the extra mile, but know when to stop.

Jason discusses life balance on his fit & effective site. I like the ideas he is exploring here and will be coming back to them in an upcoming post
